In my case, achieving it apparently means not blogging very much, anywhere, for a while. Hey, something's gotta give.
So what do you scale back on when time and energy are short?

Mr. Nonymous's father has a love-hate relationship with technology. He loves that it lets him see his granddaughter, who lives a distance away. He hates that it doesn't do what he wants in exactly the way that he wants.
And, to be fair, his computer isn't working quite as it should. But he's loathe to return it, because he doesn't like returning things--even things that don't work, apparently. And he's loathe to speed it up by removing programs he doesn't need, because he paid for them.
All of…

Jennifer Riggle has an
interesting post on The Buzz Bin about generations in the workplace.
One of the comments suggests that our biggest problem will be convincing Boomers to retire. Considering the current economic situation, I can see why a lot of them might not want to.
Besides, I'm not sure that's really going to be our biggest problem. As I see the simplistic questions that ma…

Interesting quote on p. 3 of a
recent assessment of the economy:
"Older Americans are actually gaining jobs, even as other age groups lose them. This is because skilled, older Americans who should be enjoying their Golden Years, are now being forced to return to the labor market due to the wealth destruction that has occurred in the value of their homes and retirment plans which were s…

I wonder if the conventional definition of Gen X is too American-centric or western-centric. Given that many of us now move vast distances to work, and have contacts all over the world, shouldn't we consider the demographic profile and experiences of people born 1961-1981 in Europe, Africa, Mid East, Latin America, Asia and reach out to networks, if they exist, of people our age further abroad? This would be closer to our reality and their reality too. I'm curious to know if the 'Gen X' experien…

I seem to be living in those "interesting times" I keep hearing about. Mr. Nonymous had a minor industrial accident in our garage and the end result was hand surgery. He's in a lot of pain, and the drugs aren't helping. It also doesn't help that he's in a soft cast from his fingertips nearly to his shoulder. Try making food one-handed when you aren't used to it. Don't try driving (he hasn't).
Both my supervisors are on vacation. My other colleague is working reduced hours. Our employer cut ever…

I keep hearing about how Millennials and teens are so technologically adept. They grew up with this stuff. They know it in their sleep. They're comfortable with technology in a way that we never will be.
Well, if that's so, how come so many of them lack basic web-searching skills? I have gotten a number of questions from teens in the past week. And do you know how they could be answered?
1) Look at the page I just sent you.
2) Contact the office directly.
3) There's a link to that office's con…

Apparently a
woman is suing her college because, three months after graduation, she still doesn't have a job. Does she know that we're in a recession? Based on her comments in this article, I doubt she thinks that applies to her.
I don't think I can draw conclusions about generational tendencies based on this case. However, I do think that it says something about what our society values--and it i…

I've been thinking about the alleged cynicism of Generation X. And you know what? I'm not so sure "cynicism" is right. I'm not convinced that we're cynical.
I think we're skeptical.
What's the difference, you ask? An important one. Cynicism says, "that isn't right, and you're just out for yourself." Skepticism says "show me your sources."

I am quickly approaching my anniversary. Not of a marriage or sobriety or any of the 101 events people celebrate but of the date I no longer worked at Eat your Soul, Incorporated. Officially I was laid off. Personally I like to think of it as my Day of Liberation. Of course now a year later, hopefully wiser, I find myself questioning…how did it happen? Like someone awakening from a too descriptive nightmare, I gasp in the morning light, questioning, how I could have ever succumbed to the darknes…

A couple of weeks ago, Penelope Trunk wrote a blog post about
why she doesn't feel the need to disclose whether she's paid for her reviews. Turns out the FTC
thinks she's wrong.
I think she's wrong, too. But I do wonder about the FTC's plans. I have a b…

Moving home isn't new. Moving home after college, or after a few years on your own--those aren't new, either. But why are so many doing it?
One answer is student loans. More people owe more money for their educations. And if you're intent on paying off those loans, maybe it makes sense to move home for a while.
Similarly, maybe you have a specific goal that is easier to reach if you're living at home. In the short term, this may be a good solution.
But for how long are you going to live at ho…

Boomers are big on reinvention. 50 is the new 30. They refuse to get old. They're "reinventing" retirement.
As Time magazine
points out, there's a chance for Gen Xers to get in on the reinvention game. So what can we reinvent?
Management.
So how do we do it? How do we take this vision of the future--offices without walls or hours or international borders--and make sure that the work gets d…

Social media sites are exciting--the good ones, that is. And user-generated content can be a lot of fun. It can even help you
deliver a baby.
Two years ago, the Boomer next door was a staunch and verbal advocate of technology and its power to change the world. Since then, he has switched gears entirely and decries it at a moment's notice. Except when he's switching back, telling us that Twitter…

The Washington Post has a piece by Lily Garcia about
motivating employees. I like the points she makes, and wonder why it's so hard for so many employers to grasp this.
I'm sure we all have stories of good and bad employers. I certainly do; I worked for 5-6 years apiece at two companies in the same industry. The first was nightmarish, and the only reason I stayed there so long was…
